Psychotherapy

Counselling – In this method, the client and therapist develop a trusting relationship, which allows patients to comprehensively work through their issues, explore solutions, create coping strategies, and develop self-awareness in a confidential and supportive environment. This modality is often used when the problem is unknown or complex.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – The approach of CBT is to address difficult behaviours, by challenging thoughts and feelings which may influence a patient’s actions. Usually a short-term therapy, CBT is used when the problems are known and/or temporary. The goal is to guide patients towards a stronger sense of agency around their current circumstances.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – In this model, the individual is encouraged to accept that umcomfortable feelings are an appropriate response to a challenging situation, and there is no need to deny them, avoid them, or feel guilty about them. At the same time, the individual must also commit to changing their behaviour to better cope with their circumstances.

Person-Centered Therapy – This method is based on the premise that all individuals strive to be the best version of themselves through personal growth and change. The role of the clinician is to provide some structure and guidance in each session, however allowing patients to find insights, answers and solutions within themselves.

Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) – Often used for Trauma and PTSD, this technique consists in the patient moving eyes side to side under the guidance of a trained therapist, while briefly recalling the traumatic event. This practice reliefs symptoms and reprograms the brain to experience lower levels of distress when the memory gets triggered again.

Mindfulness Training plays an important role at Brain Care, by offering patients different tools for a better lifestyle, and by bringing them to the ‘here and now’ necessary to diffuse negative thoughts and feelings that may hinder an individual’s path to a better self.

There are many other methods of psychotherapy. At Brain Care we offer these services at our clinics in Tweed Heads or Robina, or from the comfort and privacy of your home via telehealth, which is supported by Medicare, NDIS and most private health insurance providers, EAP and Workcover.

Psychotherapy refers to a group of therapies practiced in a safe and private environment, where patients talk with a healthcare professional, such as a psychologist or counsellor, in order to understand their unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviours. These are often associated with mental health issues or emotional difficulties, which may arise for different reasons. Psychotherapy tends to result in the development of healthier habits, stronger coping skills, resilience, and a better quality of life. There are different approaches to talk therapy, and a psychologist will be able to determine which one -or which combination- is best for you, based on your needs and circumstances.
